WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD BE IN EVERYONE'S BEACH BAG THIS SUMMER?
This broad-spectrum sunscreen contains skin-nourishing vitamin E for potent antioxidant protection and Avene thermal spring water to soothe and soften the skin. Covers all of the red spots and leaves a glowing finish!
The lightweight aerosol spray goes on sheer and leaves skin smooth but not greasy. It kind of smells like soap.It provides impressively long-lasting, water-resistant sun protection (you won't need to reapply even after a few vigorous laps)-and it doesn't have that unappealing sunscreen stench.
SPF 50 Rash Guards
These days my favorites are the surf brands -- Vissla - my boys LOVE all things Vissla so it ups my cool factor, and with tweens I need all the help I can get - Volcom
Great alone or over your favorite lip pencil for long wear lip color with sun protection--combining pretty with healthy is a win!
Great affordable and chic options, all SPF 50 and nearly indestructible! I keep them folded up in my purse, car, and beach bag to have on hand at all times.
WHAT TIPS AND TRICKS DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR SUMMER SKIN CARE?
It is important to be kind to the skin all year long, but especially in the summer! Travel, high altitude, chlorine, sea & salt, and of course sun can all strip and stress the skin, making it more sensitive and prone to irritation and even breakouts.
Nourishing and protecting one's natural skin barrier is essential, and I always recommend a gentle cleanser and moisturizer from head to toe (really!), especially when traveling. My current favorites are the Avene cleansing oil
and emollient baume
, and (of course) cicalfate
. Mineral based sun protective products with zinc and titanium dioxide can actually soothe the skin (like diaper cream!), so are fantastic for managing sensitive skin as well as providing great sun protection--a win all around.
Anything you actually like to use! The array of sunscreen we have to choose from now is very exciting, since of course I want everyone to use it. There really is something for everyone.
For oilier skin or just those who like a light feel (especially men), Skinceuticals SPF 50 matte
or Revision Intellishade matte
. I love all Elta products, especially the UV Elements
, which has hyaluronic acid in it to make it extra hydrating. Avene makes a great mineral based SPF 50
that is "reef safe" (chemical sunblocks have been banned in many places such as Hawaii in the interest of environmental conservation, which I think is wonderful. Any purely mineral block (zinc and titanium dioxide) meets this criteria).
ANYTHING NEW OR EXCITING?
The number of skin products and collagen building devices that enhance the thickness and youthful appearance of the skin is increasing every day. The ones that work (not all do--the "Instagram" edit is important!) are a key part of my aesthetic practice, so during the summer, I tell all of my patients to "protect their investment," since sun damages collagen and thins the skin, effectively negating the benefit. Therefore, the most important skin beauty "cream" by far is sunscreen! The fact that this also keeps the skin healthy by decreasing the risk of skin cancer is, as a dermatologist, the most important thing to me. Healthy skin is always the goal, and beautiful skin is the perk.
WHO IS DR. SEGAL AND WHY DO WE LOVE HER?
With so many products out there and bombardments of advertising, I love getting to ask my go-to gurus for their top picks. Dr. Jennifer Segal grew up in Hawaii so she understands being outside on the beach and in the sun. My summers are full of long beach walks, watching my boys surf, devouring good books shoreside and my latest new passion...ocean swimming! All of these are in the sun so I always want to know how to take care of my skin. Jennie is beyond chic, realistically grounded, sophisticated and SMART! I pick her brain every chance I get and will do ANYTHING she says with the hope that I can be one step closer to resembling her glowing skin and beautiful face. Pssst...she is just as beautiful on the inside too!
